Son of architect Pierre-Anne de Dreux and student of Théodore Géricault, Alfred de Dreux was immersed throughout his life in an artistic environment and gained renown as an equestrian and animal painter. Because of his privileged upbringing, he also befriended some of his most important patrons, such as the Duc d"Orléans, King Louis-Philippe or Emperor Napoléon III. Through his travels, de Dreux had a social advantage, notably with the English aristocracy, which gained him access to activities like horse-riding and fox hunting, scenes of which are repeatedly found in his works. In the following painting, de Dreux captured with loose brushstrokes the temperament of the dog and demonstrates his skill when representing animals in different poses.
