Picasso"s Homme barbu couronné de vigne (1962) is among the most striking of his late linocuts with printer Hidalgo Arnéra. While most known impressions were printed in earthy ochres and reds, this example features an exceptionally uncommon green-foliage color state, with the crown and beard enlivened by verdant tones rarely seen in Picasso"s linocut work. The composition evokes a mythic self-portrait in the guise of Bacchus-the bearded god of creation and vitality-executed at a time when Picasso was pushing the boundaries of color reduction printing. This vibrant palette and masterful graphic energy make it a visually unique impression from his mature period.
Work is in good condition and is hinged along the upper edge. Minor mat staining to the sheet. Pinpoint of foxing to the lower margin. Otherwise, work presents well. Framed behind acrylic measuring 37 x 33 inches.
