"Holland was rightly called the land of painting par excellence, and it is no coincidence that Rembrandt was a Dutchman. The fogs ascending from the waters, veiling the landscape and adding a specific pictorial effect to it. The watery atmosphere softens the contours and makes for the soft silverish gray tone; while the loud local colors are toned down, the grave shades are loosened up by color reflections: everything seems to be bathed in light and air."
