This work is entitled "APRÈS LE BAIN / AFTER BATH" by VU Cao Dam, who is one of the representative artists of 20th century Vietnamese painting. VU Cao Dam was good at expressing the persistent beauty of women and motherhood, with the theme of people, especially Vietnamese women and folklore. VU Cao Dam acquires Western paintings and sculpture techniques at the L'école des Beaux-Arts de l'Indochine (Academy of Fine Arts) in Hanoi in addition to silk painting which is a traditional painting technique of Vietnam, and he soon arrived in Paris in 1931 shortly after graduation. He learnt French paintings and sculptures, including participating in the colonial exposition held at the same place, further deepening his own art. In the 1940s, it became hard to obtain materials such as bronze used for sculpture production due to the influence of World War II, and as a trigger from this, it became to handle a lot of paintings. This work aims to blend elements of Western painting and Indochina's paintings, not only if it was valuable, as his initial painting which gradually created its own style. It could be said that it is a superb work that he was expressing not only women's curvaceous appearance but also the beauty of the interior with a soft texture. His favorite motifs were portraits and scenes mostly depicting his compatriots in Vietnamese traditional clothing. His lines are elongated, the colors are subtle and the silhouettes are delicate and graceful. The works of Vu Cao Dam are full of gentleness and poetry. Vu Cao Dam was born in 1908 in Hanoi, Vietnam. He entered the Indochina School of Fine Arts in 1926, where he studied painting, drawing and sculpture until 1931. During the first ten years of his career, he mainly worked in sculpture, which is how he became famous.
